I've been recording, mixing and editing sound for live events, film, video and television productions for more than 5 decades and I've received 11 Emmys® and numerous other awards for my work. When you need an experienced studio audio producer/director, sound editor or on-set location sound mixer for your next project, I've got the equipment, and expertise to give you great sound. Please note that my studio is capable of full audio post-production for film and video, including ADR and voice track recording. For location sound, I work only with my own equipment.

I taught myself to edit music at 12 years old and have been serving the film and video production communities with a complete array of sound services ever since. My goal is to breathe life into your productions with Emmy® award-winning sound design, recording and post-production audio and video services. 

Basic Studio Time (includes directing, editing [sound and video], etc):  $125/hour
Voice Actor audition sessions:  $1.00 per minute (minimum audition session of 20 minutes)
Block rates available for single sessions in excess of 4 hours - 25% discount off hourly rate
Production rates available for projects requiring more than one full production day - please call

Location Sound Mixer Rates

BEST RATE GUARANTEE: Everyone wants the best deal they can get and I’m willing to make deals – so long as they don’t sacrifice quality. To that end; I will match or beat any legitimate quote from any qualified mixer with the same or similar gear for the same job. I will also be happy to discuss your specific needs for combined packages or multi-day bookings that may result in a considerable discount. Simply put... I'll work with you to give you great sound within your budget.

Please note that I offer a "Production Package" that includes me as sound mixer, a boom operator and all equipment necessary for a major shoot.

The "Day/Project" rates below are for my time, expertise and the level of skill I bring to your project. Equipment rental is separate and will vary depending on your production requirements.

LOCATION SOUND NON-UNION LABOR RATES:
(Rates apply to San Diego County only. All rates Portal-to-Portal. Please call for out-of-town rates.)

PRODUCTION PACKAGE - 2 PERSON SOUND CREW:

DAY RATE (Sound Mixer & Boom Op Labor, Full Equipment Pkg, and expendibles)

  • $1950 / 10 hour day
  • $2300 / 12 hour day

Includes all of the following:

  • James Alburger as sound mixer
  • A2/Boom operator
  • Full equipment package (10 track recorder, up to 8 lav/body mics or 7 lav + boom)

DAY RATE - FULL DAY (Sound Mixer Labor Only - Equipment Extra)

All rates Portal-to-Portal

  • $450 / 5 hour day (half-day)
  • $750 / 10 hour day
  • $850 / 12 hour day 
  • Additional hours – $75 / hour

ADDITIONAL PERSONNEL

Boom Operator / A2 Assistant: (required when boom mic is requested and/or sound mix requires more than two lav mics, or when playback is required on set.)

  • $250 / 5 hour day (half-day)
  • $450 / 10 hour day 
  • $550 / 12 hour day
  • Additional hours – $35 / hour

Sound Third / A3 Utility

  • $150 / 5 hour day (half-day)
  • $250 / 10 hour day
  • $300 / 12 hour day
  • Additional hours – $25 / hour

TRAVEL DAY, IDLE DAY, and KILL FEE rates

  • Within US: Labor = 50% Contracted day rate within US unless travel exceeds 10 hours from airport call to arrival at destination hotel.
  • Outside US travel days are at full day rate.
  • Equipment (when booked separately) = 50% daily rate for gear rental
  • Mileage at prevailing IRS allowance (54 cents/mile for 2018)
    [Applies for ground travel in excess of 25 miles one way within San Diego County (point-to-point)]
  • Per Diem at prevailing GSA M&IE rates. (per day - minimum $91 lodging, $51 meals)
    [Applies when booking requires travel outside San Diego County for one or more days]

  • All travel related expenses (air, hotel, parking, vehicle rental, etc.) paid by production

  • Air or International travel: I have a valid US passport. Production covers round-trip business class air fare to the airport closest to the production destination, plus ground transportation. Travel documents and visas are to be arranged by the client.
  • Cancellations within 24 hours or less will pay 100% of full day rate for contracted days
  • Cancellations within 48-24 hours will pay 50% of full day rate for contracted days

PAYMENT TERMS

  • First invoice for ALL new clients is COD with full payment due upon completion of work (Cash, PayPal or Company Check)
  • All invoices are net 30 days. Late or past-due payments are subject to a 10% collection fee.

I use my own equipment to handle most film/video production and live event situations, including multi-room/multi-mic audio setups. Equipment Package is in addition to labor rates and can be adapted according to your specific production needs. I can easily handle up to 8 wireless mics on set or up to 16 audio sources for a live event. Should your project require third-party rental of additional equipment, a 10% surcharge will be added to the rental fee. Additional personnel may be required at separate charge.

Equipment is in addition to labor day rate. 
Suitable for Commercial, Film, Television, ENG, Corp interview, Documentary and most video shoots.
Additional À la Carte Gear can be added to this package (see below).

  • 1 – Zoom F8 – 8 channel, 10 track digital mixer/recorder – record to SD (Time Code Lock capable)
  • 1 – Wired hop for 1 or 2-channel audio to camera - up to 50' (XLR-M for camera input)
  • 3 – Wireless lav mic kit (Tx, Rx, lav mic, cables, and related accessories for up to 3 mics)
  • 1 – Bag, Harness, minor cable accessories
  • Expendables, cables, A/C power cords and batteries for one day.   

FULL FIELD EQUIPMENT PACKAGE – $750.00 / day
Equipment package is in addition to labor day rate, unless Day Rate Production Package is booked.
Suitable for larger film shoots, interview panel programs, and productions requiring complex audio.
Additional À la Carte Gear can be added to this package (see below).

  • 1 – Field mixer with keyboard
  • 1 – Field playback (amplified speaker and computer as needed)
  • 1 – Cart Based mixing/recording station
  • 1 – Boom mic kit with carbon fiber pole – Sennheiser 416
  • 1 – Wired hop for 1 or 2-channel audio to camera - up to 50' (XLR-M for camera input)
  • 8 – Wireless lav mic kit (Tx, Rx, lav mic, cables, and related accessories for up to 8 mics)
  • 1 – Bag, Harness, minor cable accessories
  • 1 – boom pole holder for c-stand or mic stand (tripod base mic stand available)
  • 1 – backup digital recorder 
  • Expendables, cables, A/C power cords and batteries for one day.  

FEATURE, REALITY, EPISODIC, DOCMENTARY, AND LIVE EVENT AUDIO PACKAGE

  • Package contents and rates subject to negotiation based upon production needs and duration.
  • The Standard Equipment Package will accommodate most film location productions.

  • Head-worn (over-ear) mics for Sennheiser G3 wireless mics (2 available) - $50 ea
  • 2-channel digital recorders (5 available) – $25 ea

  • PA Speaker (small, portable) - for near-field audio playback or PA – $35 (see below for full PA system)

  • Portable Voiceover Booth – $35 (includes tripod base mic stand and VBM-90s condenser mic)
  • 7' x 7' x 7' free-standing voiceover booth – $300 / 7-day rental (setup/teardown not included)
  • Setup/Teardown for free-standing voiceover booth (takes approximateily 1 hour) – $200 (delivery included)
  • Reference video monitor (HD 20") – $25
  • Portable 12v battery/A/C inverter – $25 (portable battery power supply for A/C powered equipment)

PA SYSTEM / MUSIC PLAYBACK

Standard PA / Playback System – $200
Suitable for small events and meetings up to 50 attendees

  • 4x - Handheld microphones (cabled or wireless - includes mic cables as needed)
  • 2x - Speakers – Each with stands
  • Portable sub-mixer, related cabling, and related minor accessories. 
  • Video projector and screen available (add $75)

NOTE:  For larger events, additional mixers, speakers and microphones are available and additional crew may be required. Please call for a quote.

Terms And Conditions

  • Equipment package rental is in addition to day/project day rate commencing after first two consecutive shooting days and applies only when booked af the full labor day rate.
  • ALL invoices are net 30 days, due upon receipt. First time clients are COD (Cash, PayPal or Company Check). Late payments are subject to a 10% collection fee.
  • New clients may be required to pay an advance deposit, pay COD, and/or provide credit references.
  • Accepted payment terms are PayPal, cash, check, credit card (via PayPal), or approved payroll service.
  • Client must accept and sign VoiceActing, LLC rental agreement for all gear used, prior to use.
  • Client to provide approved insurance and documents naming VoiceActing, LLC as additional insured.
  • Client assumes all responsibility for loss, damage, along with repair or replacement of same of any rented item(s) or gear packages for the term of the shoot. Production is responsible for paying the insurance deductible if claim is to be filed.
  • All rates subject to change.
