Your room acoustics will be a major factor in the overall quality of your recordings. The acoustic foam products here will do an excellent job of killing reflected sounds, reverberation, echoes, and even help reduce noise from entering your room. There are several ways to attach the foam to your walls: You can use nails or use the special adhesive. The "Roominator Alpha 1" has enough foam to cover an entire wall of a small room and will be a good start for most home studios. Lots of other options are included here for those of you who want to do more.

For a cost-effective alternative to completely re-doing the acoustics of your room, check out the Mic Thing and the sE Reflexion. Both will do a great job of killing reflected sounds in your room.

SMPro Audio Mic Thing Microphone Isolation Panel

This is an excellent option for controlling room acoustics without having to make major changes to walls and windows. Your mic can be positioned within the Mic Thing to effectively prevent or minimize extraneous sound from reaching the mic. The most important thing about good recording is the environment surrounding the mic, and this unit creates a relatively "dead" zone around the microphone.

SMPro Audio Mic Thing Microphone Isolation Panel

The Mic Thing is a portable multi-purpose acoustic treatment panel suitable for minimizing room artifacts and improving separation during microphone recording sessions. Great for a range of applications including helping to control room ambience, minimizing spill from instrument amplifiers, or even creating temporary control rooms the Mic Thing is certainly one handy thing!Good microphone separation and isolation means a cleaner recording and a more controlled end result. Although the question of how much microphone separation is really necessary in any given situation, audio engineers around the world unanimously agree that if given the chance, they would rather be in control of these factors than not.The Mic Thing is essentially a 2" (50mm)-thick acoustic tile housed inside an adjustable lightweight steel frame. Two screw clamps mean easy mounting to tube widths of up to 1" (25mm) diameter. Solid metal panels act as additional sound barriers. The absorbing panel is treated with Ultra-Fresh anti-microbial to control bacteria, mold, mildew, and fungi. The Mic Thing's two winged panels can also be adjusted to create anything from a flat planar absorber to a tight semi-circle enclosing the microphone. This way, the amount of separation and absorption can be easily be manipulated to suit requirements. By tightening the wing panel attitude, greater isolation and a dryer sound can be achieved. Varying the mic position will also affect the result.

sE Electronics Reflexion Filter

This is an excellent option for controlling room acoustics without having to make major changes to walls and windows. Your mic can be positioned within the Reflexion parabola to effectively prevent or minimize extraneous sound from reaching the mic. The most important thing about good recording is the environment surrounding the mic, and this unit creates a relatively "dead" zone around the microphone.

sE Electronics Reflexion Filter

The Reflexion Filter is a portable device for recording live sound sources with reduced room ambience. It is an advanced composite wall which is positioned behind any microphone by means of a variable position stand clamp assembly which ships with the product. The main function is to help obtain a 'dry' vocal or instrument recording. This is especially useful in studios without proper acoustic treatment, but can also be used to help record takes in control rooms, where the performer also has to operate the recording device, or in rehearsal studios to reduce ambient noise. The Reflexion Filter has 6 main layers. Firstly, a strong layer of punched aluminum which allows sound waves to pass through it, diffused, to a layer of absorptive wool. The sound waves then hit a layer of Aluminum foil which helps dissipate energy and break up the lower frequency waveforms, and from here they hit an air space kept open by rods passing through the various layers. The air gap acts as an acoustic barrier. The sound waves then pass to a further layer of wool and then through an outer, punched, aluminum wall which further serve to absorb then diffuse the remaining acoustic energy. The main absorber has 4 formed pieces of state-of-the-art specialist acoustic absorptive material attached to its face via the extended separation rods, which further serve to absorb and then diffuse the sound waves as they pass to the main filter. The stand assembly is composed of a mic stand clamp fitting, which attaches by means of a vertical joint to the horizontal bar assembly onto which both the Reflexion Filter, and any standard fitting shock mount can be fixed. The microphone (in its shock mount) can then be moved both vertically and horizontally along the bar, and the Reflexion Filter itself can be moved vertically to obtain the optimum working position. The various layers both absorb and diffuse the sound waves hitting them, so progressively less of the original source acoustic energy passes through each layer. This reduces the amount of energy hitting untreated walls and other surfaces so there is less of the original source reflected back as unwanted room ambience to the mic. The Reflexion Filter also helps prevent any reflected sound reaching the back and sides of the mic. Its shape and size have been carefully tested to maximize absorption while keeping 'coloration' down to only around 1dB, and leaving the microphone's polar pattern unaffected.

Auralex 4

Auralex 4" Pyramid Foam 6-Pack Red

4" Studiofoam Pyramids are recommended for larger spaces, rooms with pronounced low frequency problems, or where sonic accuracy is mandatory and stronger acoustic absorption is required.Having 4 sides exposed on each pyramid also yields more sound wave diffusion, which is desirable in some spaces. Thus, 4" acoustic Studiofoam Pyramids will yield less overall dryness than 4" Studiofoam Wedges.

Primacoustic Cloud 9 Acoustic Ceiling Treatment

Primacoustic Cloud 9 Acoustic Ceiling Treatment

Primacoustic Cloud-9 makes treating the ceiling with acoustic foam easy! Complete with backboards, installing Cloud-9 only takes a few minutes. Once up, you will enjoy tighter imaging and a larger sweet spot.Treating the ceiling is the final hurdle in controlling sound in a studio. The monitor-to-ceiling reflections can reduce imaging while the floor-to-ceiling parallel surfaces can cause resonance due to the standing waves. The Primacoustic Cloud-9 ceiling panel system is a complete ceiling kit that includes high-density open-cell absorptive foam panels, sturdy backboards, and adhesive. In fact, everything you need to get great professional results easily is included. All you do is glue the acoustic panels to the backboards, let cure, and then affix the complete Cloud-9 assembly to the ceiling using finishing nails or drywall screws. No holding the panels overhead while waiting for the adhesive to set and no permanent damage to your ceiling!Following the LEDE concept, Cloud-9 is usually placed above the console. When combined with wall systems like Europa and Orientique, Cloud-9 helps create your room's 'dead-end' by reducing flutter echo, standing waves and strong primary reflections. If desired, Primacoustic Cloud-9 may be painted with latex paint using an airless sprayer. Auralex pArtScience AudioTile ShockWave 48 Square Feet

Auralex pArtScience AudioTile ShockWave 48 Square Feet

As we've all learned, taming the acoustics of a room with absorption is an essential element for capturing and reproducing high-quality audio performances and broadcasts. AudioTile accomplishes this effectively while offering eye-catching designs that will make any room stand out from the rest.Make no mistake; while AudioTile's coolness factor is high, there is still plenty of science behind the art. Varying thickness built into each patent-pending AudioTile deliver excellent broadband absorption, while the design patterns allow a unique means of blending absorption, diffusion, and reflection for optimum acoustical balance tailored to any room.As AudioTile's tessellated panels are spread out, broadband absorption is maximized and the areas of exposed hard surface provide high frequency scattering. By doing this, several major goals are accomplished: providing a room with good low frequency control, creating a very tight sound in areas where drums or amplifiers might be placed, and simultaneously offering a nice reverberant sound in upper areas where overhead and/or ambient room microphones would be placed. This design approach can give a room a very natural-sounding ambience while controlling undesirable acoustical anomalies. AudioTile is perfect for a wide variety of aesthetic and acoustical environments. The result is a well-controlled space essentially void of reflection issues, but which is not a "dead space", and a frequency response with minimal low-frequency modal concerns. For voice, it can yield a "locked-on" fundamental of the voice talent- no hollowness, or resonance - simply a clear-open response. This is exceptionally suited for today's broadcast standards that require the highest quality mics, mic preamps and processing. And there is still more science behind this great product: AudioTile uses the proprietary Studiofoam formula. It's the same formula that tens of thousands of customers have entrusted to deliver Studiofoam's superior durability and Class B flame retardancy for the past 25 years.Back to the art part: AudioTile designs are fun and exciting and the possibilities are almost endless for you to create one-of-a- kind designs that fit the "personality" of your room.
