If you're planning to record professional-quality audio from your home studio, you'll most likely be standing up. You'll need a mic stand and a copy stand. If you're sitting down to record, a floor boom stand will give you better flexibility and will keep the stand out of your way, so it's not sitting on your desk, blocking your computer.

SMPro Audio Mic Thing Microphone Isolation Panel

This is an excellent option for controlling room acoustics without having to make major changes to walls and windows. Your mic can be positioned within the Mic Thing to effectively prevent or minimize extraneous sound from reaching the mic. The most important thing about good recording is the environment surrounding the mic, and this unit creates a relatively "dead" zone around the microphone.

SMPro Audio Mic Thing Microphone Isolation Panel

The Mic Thing is a portable multi-purpose acoustic treatment panel suitable for minimizing room artifacts and improving separation during microphone recording sessions. Great for a range of applications including helping to control room ambience, minimizing spill from instrument amplifiers, or even creating temporary control rooms the Mic Thing is certainly one handy thing!Good microphone separation and isolation means a cleaner recording and a more controlled end result. Although the question of how much microphone separation is really necessary in any given situation, audio engineers around the world unanimously agree that if given the chance, they would rather be in control of these factors than not.The Mic Thing is essentially a 2" (50mm)-thick acoustic tile housed inside an adjustable lightweight steel frame. Two screw clamps mean easy mounting to tube widths of up to 1" (25mm) diameter. Solid metal panels act as additional sound barriers. The absorbing panel is treated with Ultra-Fresh anti-microbial to control bacteria, mold, mildew, and fungi. The Mic Thing's two winged panels can also be adjusted to create anything from a flat planar absorber to a tight semi-circle enclosing the microphone. This way, the amount of separation and absorption can be easily be manipulated to suit requirements. By tightening the wing panel attitude, greater isolation and a dryer sound can be achieved. Varying the mic position will also affect the result.

sE Electronics Reflexion Filter

This is an excellent option for controlling room acoustics without having to make major changes to walls and windows. Your mic can be positioned within the Reflexion parabola to effectively prevent or minimize extraneous sound from reaching the mic. The most important thing about good recording is the environment surrounding the mic, and this unit creates a relatively "dead" zone around the microphone.

sE Electronics Reflexion Filter

The Reflexion Filter is a portable device for recording live sound sources with reduced room ambience. It is an advanced composite wall which is positioned behind any microphone by means of a variable position stand clamp assembly which ships with the product. The main function is to help obtain a 'dry' vocal or instrument recording. This is especially useful in studios without proper acoustic treatment, but can also be used to help record takes in control rooms, where the performer also has to operate the recording device, or in rehearsal studios to reduce ambient noise. The Reflexion Filter has 6 main layers. Firstly, a strong layer of punched aluminum which allows sound waves to pass through it, diffused, to a layer of absorptive wool. The sound waves then hit a layer of Aluminum foil which helps dissipate energy and break up the lower frequency waveforms, and from here they hit an air space kept open by rods passing through the various layers. The air gap acts as an acoustic barrier. The sound waves then pass to a further layer of wool and then through an outer, punched, aluminum wall which further serve to absorb then diffuse the remaining acoustic energy. The main absorber has 4 formed pieces of state-of-the-art specialist acoustic absorptive material attached to its face via the extended separation rods, which further serve to absorb and then diffuse the sound waves as they pass to the main filter. The stand assembly is composed of a mic stand clamp fitting, which attaches by means of a vertical joint to the horizontal bar assembly onto which both the Reflexion Filter, and any standard fitting shock mount can be fixed. The microphone (in its shock mount) can then be moved both vertically and horizontally along the bar, and the Reflexion Filter itself can be moved vertically to obtain the optimum working position. The various layers both absorb and diffuse the sound waves hitting them, so progressively less of the original source acoustic energy passes through each layer. This reduces the amount of energy hitting untreated walls and other surfaces so there is less of the original source reflected back as unwanted room ambience to the mic. The Reflexion Filter also helps prevent any reflected sound reaching the back and sides of the mic. Its shape and size have been carefully tested to maximize absorption while keeping 'coloration' down to only around 1dB, and leaving the microphone's polar pattern unaffected.

Nady Metal Pop Filter Black

A "Pop" filter will help minimize unwanted breath from hitting the mic's diaphragm and can extend the mic's life.

Nady Metal Pop Filter Black

Metal mesh filter reduces plosives and breath moisture from reaching the mic.

Not an essential accessory, but good to have around when you need it.

Recording Software:

The software you choose for recording will depend on what you want to do and how complex your recordings will be. For basic voice recording you can start with Audacity, which is free. There are LOTS of recording software available. If you're just starting, I'd suggest downloading Audacity and, over time, begin to research other software options.
