Cold Copy Crash Course
A 1-Day Intensive
This is an on-mic immersion workshop designed to develop the student’s cold-reading interpretive skills. You won’t get any lecture or review here - just a continuous series of on-mic sessions directed by James Alburger and Penny Abshire.
- This workshop moves very fast - you’ll have about 5 minutes to deliver your best “read.”
- You get personalized direction with every script
- All of your mic work is recorded so you can review your performances later.
- The last hour of this course is devoted to a discussion of the day’s experiences and lessons learned.
As a professional voice talent, you are expected to deliver the perfect “read” within one or two takes - or, at least, to be very close to what your client is looking for. Of course, that rarely happens, but that’s what today’s producers expect! You must be able to make instantaneous choices in your delivery if you are going to play in the big leagues. And you must be able to adjust those choices quickly and efficiently. Even if you’re just getting started, a mastery of cold-reading skills is essential when you have a lot of auditions to send out.
During the VoiceActing Academy Cold Copy Crash Course you will have numerous opportunities to work “cold” with a variety of copy styles ranging from single-voice commercials to dialog to corporate narration to animation character voices. Every script will challenge you to bring all of your performing skills together for your performance. You’ll learn as much (or more) from watching your fellow students work as you will when you’re on mic!
To participate in this workshop, we require that you have had at least some basic training in performing for voiceover. You must be a graduate of one of our VoiceActing Academy workshops or that of another qualified voice acting coach. Simply having read a few books on voiceover or even having some acting experience will not qualify you for this course.
We offer the Cold Copy Crash Course as a separate 1-day workshop and will occasionally include this as part of a Masters Class. This class is only scheduled when we have a total of 10 confirmed participants.
